An Introduction to EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This is a very effective technique that can be used for Trauma. We do not know how EMDR works exactly. In a nutshell, EMDR allows individuals to process traumatic memories by using eye movements.

EMDR can be delivered to adults and children and sometimes is recommended when it is difficult for people to talk about trauma. EMDR focuses on specific memories identified during the assessment and formulation stage.

EMDR follows a very precise protocol and requires an assessment to determine if it can be delivered or not. For instance, it cannot be delivered if individuals are feeling unsafe due to trauma, at risk of ending their life, or there is lack of stability. In this case other psychotherapies for Trauma may be considered (such as Trauma Focused CBT).

EMDR has 8 steps and it very successful. It can last from 6 to 12 sessions and weekly attendance is recommended. For further information please refer to the following website: https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/treatments/eye-movement-reprocessing
